Dorst – Dutch for 'thirst' – is the art installation that Anika van de Wijngaard and I made. Dorst is an archive for language. Sheets of paper with stamped poetry have been hung out to dry, but then they have been affected by water. The language has faded and has become partly incomprehensible. With this work we reflect on our influence and vulnerability in our relationship with water and nature.
Around the art installation we also organized talks by experts and researchers, performances and workshops by other artists, together with Museum De Lakenhal and Studium Generale, Leiden University.

The art installation Dorst presents itself as a multi-layered archive in which language and water communicate with each other in surprising ways. At a time when climate change is reorganizing not only natural, but also social and communicative dynamics, the project unfolds its intellectual richness. It thematizes the physical human need for water – a vital substance that shapes our existence in all its facets – and at the same time refers to the symbolic longing for renewal and change.
In the field of tension between visual art and literary expressiveness, Dorst opens up a dialogue on the effects of the Anthropocene. The installation uses sheets of paper on which words once conveyed the clarity of communication. As these sheets are hung up, they are subject to the unstoppable effects of water within the installation. The resulting blurring and partial illegibility of the writing becomes a metaphor for the change and transience of our words and language in a world characterised by ecological crises.
Jos Agasi @jos_agasi and Anika van de Wijngaard @anikavandewijngaard invite viewers to reflect on our ambivalent relationship with nature. While at first glance the Netherlands appears to be blessed with an abundance of water, current warnings from drinking water companies urge caution. Dorst thus impressively illustrates how fragile and at the same time important our natural resources are - an appeal to recognise the signs of the times and actively work towards a sustainable future.

Dorst is a project of the flowing initiative Vloed, the interdisciplinary project, in which art and literature take the lead in the conversation about our relationship with nature and with each other. The value of art is not tied to its social relevance, but art can touch us, move us, and bring us new insights.
The plants on the shelves are snake plants (Dracaena trifasciata), which can survive with very little water. They were often used in the films of David Lynch, who died just a few weeks before the opening of our exhibition. A tribute.
